What is NGV Kids Summer Festival 2022?

The National Gallery of Victoria's NGV Kids Summer Festival will run again this January 2022. The theme of the Festival for Kids is based upon the NGV exhibit The Gecko and the Mermaid: Nyapanyapa and Djerrkŋu Yunupiŋu.

Events at the NGV in Melbourne include Welcome to Country on 15 January 2022, and Drop-by Drawing sessions, as well as relaxed sessions with fewer people and reduced noise and lights.

NGV Kids on Tour and NGV Teens on Tour 2022 are events and activities in metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria as part of the NGV Kids Summer Festival.

The art exhibition The Gecko and the Mermaid: Nyapanyapa and Djerrkŋu Yunupiŋu is a set of hands on activities by Ms N. Yunupiŋu and her sister Eunice Djerrkŋu Yunupiŋu especially for kids.

What is NGV Kids on Tour?

NGV Kids on Tour is just over a week of kids arts activities across Melbourne suburbs and regional Victoria in January 2022 based around the National Gallery of Victoria's exhibit The Gecko and the Mermaid: Nyapanyapa and Djerrkŋu Yunupiŋu.

Also in January 2022 NGV Teens will be running which is a set of photography activities aimed at 13 to 18 year olds.

  • We are Mermaids - Children make a diorama based upon Djerrkŋu Yunupiŋu’s story about her life as a mermaid before she was born.

  • Noisy Birds! - Children learn their names of birds in Yolŋu Matha (the language of Yolŋu people) in a drawing and guessing game.

  • Collecting Maypal - In this board game children play a collecting game and find out about different shellfish known as maypal in Yolŋu Matha (the language of Yolŋu people).

NGV Teens activities for teenagers in 2022:

  • Tom Black - workshop or take home activity to learn techniques for shooting in the dark

  • Aurie Indianna - workshop or take home activity to learn techniques to style a look
